Live w/ The XX
It seems like events and shows in the DMV are always a roll of the dice. For whatever reason, we have events that choose to compete against each other & split viewership on the same nights rather than spread out the dates and collect all the money. This makes it difficult for the audience and the press/shooters that have to make decisions on which to attend. This past Saturday for example, one of our biggest local festivals in Broccoli City Fest took place on the same day as one of our monumental timepieces in the Funk Parade. But this useless competition not only hurts sales for the organizers but also dampens the experience for the audience. How can we compete with the NYs & ATLs & LAs if our biggest events don't even capture the full essence because the crowds are split. It's hard enough not having a legitimate platform to launch content. It's hard enough that these current platforms don't fully support and accept the artists looking to thrive. But then to have separation when it comes to actually delivering, makes being an artist that much harder.
I fully missed the entire day at the Funk Parade. I was given what I thought was media access to Broccoli City (I later found out otherwise), so my initial priority was the attend that. Upon arriving, I was definitely mistaken and I ended up leaving because I had passes to The XX & Sampha show and I am a bit conflicted on how I should feel.
First off, I will say that The XX show was phenomenal. One of the best shows I've seen in awhile. It provided an escape from the typical HipHop space that comes with the normal HipHop show. It has been awhile since I have felt the true essence that comes with festival vibes and if you've never been to Merriweather Post Pavillion, you will have no clue what I am talking about. I missed Sampha because I'm not used to concerts starting at 5pm but catching The XX was dope.
I am a little upset that I didn't get the chance to capture Solange & Rae Sremmurd but these are the choices we are faced with. To Stand or sit, to walk or run. We follow life in the way it takes us, much like a wave in the ocean. All-in-all, the best we can do is just allow things to fall as they may and hope that it works in your favor.
