Be You

How comfortable are you with being you?

As a society, we have always struggled with showcasing a confidence to be true to oneself. I see it a lot, both online and in person, people are Sims - too afraid to embrace their individuality, so they portray themselves to be what they perceive that the world wants them to be. If we look at rappers, models, workers, bosses & etc, most seem to be only a mirror reflection of what appears to be "cool" in Pop culture. So kids grow up believing that they have to act out a role to obtain a certain level of appreciation and in turn, become adults that tow that same line. We live in an era where it's popular to be the user, than it is to be the dealer; where it's more profitable to be a duplicate than to be the original. But what comes with the popularity, always lacks substance and due to the lack of substance, the reign is always short lived. What has created legends and I will always continue to chase, is longevity. It's hard to wash away a house that is built on strong foundation, just as it is hard to get rid of a creative that is grounded in their ability to continuously create. What's sad about all of this, is that the unique beings that exist in culture are the ones that make the largest impact: from Pharrel, to Tyler, to Kanye, to Gaga, to Madonna and the list goes on. But it all comes back to my initial question, how comfortable are you with being you.

To stand out in a pack takes a bit of individuality. In order to achieve what most hope, you must love, embrace & understand yourself before you can provide that personna to the world. And now more than ever, it is extremely easy to make a living off of being your best self. This level of self-love comes with practice but it definitely achievable - it all starts with your thoughts and words. I hear people all the time call themselves dumb or stupid, ugly or unattractive but the only difference between dumb & smart, ugly & attractive, is confidence. Have you ever had a conversation with someone at a bar that felt good & by the next time you saw them, you didn't even notice that they actually didn't know everything? Or how about seeing a person standing at a crosswalk & once they start walking down the street with their chin up, in a strong stride and you do a double take because you didn't realize how attractive they were? Both of these instances have more to do with confidence than anything. The way you present yourself to the world is how the world will then receive you. So if you present yourself as the dumb, awkward, ugly person that you believe in your head, chances are that the world will treat you the same way. But on the flip side, if you embrace yourself, love your flaws & use your mind to create positive thoughts about yourself, rather than negative ones, then you will get treated in the same way as well. We love people like Cardi B & Kanye because no matter what anyone says about them, they are unapologetically themselves. And that is a trait that we secretly all desire but it all begins with the question I will continue to pose, how comfortable are you with being you?
